Surah Shams is the ninety-first surah of the Qur'an and one of the Meccan surahs that is included in the thirtieth chapter of the Qur'an. This surah is called Shams (sun) for this reason, because at the beginning of it, an oath is taken to the sun. This surah emphasizes the moral issue of self-cultivation and purification and refers to the story of Saleh (a.s.) and Naqah Saleh and its capture by the people of Thamud and the fate of this people. In virtue of reciting Surah Shams, it is mentioned that "Whoever recites Surah Shams, it is as if he has given charity as much as the sun and moon shine on it."
